Patri's College Graduation

I graduated from a college in Los Angeles. It was
hot. Sweltering hot. Some parents apparently have strange ideas
that formal garb is necessary for august occasions, even when
common sense dictates otherwise. Isn't the important thing the
diploma (well, the important thing is the education, but if we
are going to place too much value on concrete physical phenomena,
I'd still go with the diploma!)? Is adhering to some arbitrary
societal standard of fashion really more important than comfort?
There were people wearing full regalia - wool suits - under their
robes. Honestly. I wore boxers and a bow tie and looked pityingly
at those who were clearly suffering, wondering how intelligent
people could have such odd priorities. My parents, fortunately,
being sensible, do not make those sorts of unreasonable demands,
not that I would have gone along if they had, although they do,
I believe, rather regret their son's unfortunate tendency, you
may have seen this coming, to use run-on sentences with lots of
comma-delimited phrases. Mudd Graduation, May '98

pictures were taken with Patri's Dad's digital camera, which he
had not used much, and had some quality problems. Notice the ray
of light spearing down in this picture. It is unclear whether
it is a halo of magnificence from some patron diety or an attempted
strike by an inhuman foe, but either way, it missed. Phew. Mudd
